Product DescriptionCochas Chico, a small farming community nestled In the Andean mountains of Huancayo Peru, is home to a rich tradition of gourd carving. Gourds or Mates have been decorated traditionally for thousands of years by the Andes people. Originally, each gourd's elaborate etching would depict a story from their Peruvian ancestors. Today, gourd decorating is often the only source of economic income for the artisans of Cochas Chico.
Not only can these decorated gourds become a lovely home accessory, but also are created into musical instruments, such as Maracas (meaning 'rattles'). The gourd's elongated shape serve as handles while the rounded portions are decorated and their natural seeds inside make a delightful noise when they are shaken.
These gourd maracas are decorated with a Village scene - a smiling sun, happy llama, and a small house.
Measure approx. 7" long. Since natural gourds are used, each maraca is subject to a slight difference in shape.
