In a village nestled among pine trees in the mountains of northern Nicaragua, there is a women's cooperative in El Cerro, established with the help of a Dutch organization, that continues to grow today. After harvesting the pine needles, the women create beautiful pine needle baskets by hand - the basket-weaving sometimes taking up to a week to complete just one.
The craftsmanship of each basket is excellent. The sides are smooth and each piece is well-shaped and feels very solid and sturdy. The purchase of these decorative pine needle baskets helps continue this inventive art form while also providing an incentive to the people of El Cerro to maintain acceptable forest management.
This large pine needle basket comes complete with an attached lid and double handles. It measures approx. 6.5" tall x 8.5" wide (not including the 1.5" wide handles on either side). The basket continues to be aromatic with a slight pine scent. It is sure to please for years to come.
